Graham asks…

Are there things in our daily lives and in our environment that can contribute to infertility? Are there things we can do or not do that will actually increase our chances of fertility?

eMedToday answers:

Cell Phone Usage

A joint study by the Medical University of Graz, Austria and Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada published in October 2011 was done on the effect of cell phones on male sperm quality. They examined 2110 men attending infertility clinics from 1993 to October 2007. They were split into two groups – Group 1 cell phone users, and Group 2 who did not use cell phones. A significant difference was observed in sperm morphology between the two groups. The results indicated that cell phone use negatively affects sperm quality in men.

Smoking

It is commonly known that pregnant women should not smoke cigarettes due to the dangers of nicotine on the developing fetus. However smoking can reduce both male and female fertility and also negatively impact conception. A study published in Human Reproduction revealed that secondhand smoke also adversely affected pregnancy rates. a Polish study indicated that smoking significantly lowered sperm count and affceted the health of sperm.

Stress

Stress can have a negative impact on the reproductive system. According to Allen Morgan, MD, director of Shore Institute for Reproductive Medicine, stress can be a critical factor undermining fertility and conception. Women having infertility treatments at his clinic are given relaxing massage to reduce stress levels before embryo transfer, and he reports that the results are encouraging. Stress expert Dr. Alice Domar at Harvard University claims that some women who have stress-reduction therapy to assist them to cope with the emotional and stressful consequences of infertility became pregnant just by learning to relax.

Nutrition

Research indicates that it is common that important nutrients are lacking in many people who are infertile. In a study in OBGYN News, a group of Harvard researchers found that 79% of infertile couples had a lower-than-average intake of foods high in antioxidants — like fruits and vegetables. This may not only be the situation in infertile couples and may be a wider common problem throughout the community. However adequate and balanced nutrition is a key factor for conception and also the health of the developing fetus.

In the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology researchers from Hong Kong found that couples with unexplained infertility as well as men with abnormal semen also had high blood levels of mercury. Not coincidentally, the men and women also reported a diet high in fish.

Supplements

Published in Reproductive Biomedicine Online, German doctors found that men’s sperm quality and function improved by taking supplements of zinc and folic acid, or (actyl)-carnitine.

A study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Medicine, found that after one week of daily doses of 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, sperm counts in men rose by some 140%.

In Fertility and Sterility doctors reported that men with fertility problems who took a daily dose of 66 milligrams of zinc and 5 milligrams of folic acid for nearly six months saw a 74% increase in their sperm counts. The same journal reports that both L-carnitine and L-acetyl carnitine improved sperm in a number of areas critical to fertilization.

The Journal of Reproductive Medicine reports that doctors found a combination of supplements in a product known as Fertility Blend increased conception rates. It’s key ingredients: folic acid, vitamins E, B-6, and B-12, iron, magnesium, zinc, the amino acid L-arginine, selenium, the herb chasteberry (also know known as vitex), and green tea. Infertile women aged 24 to 46 who took the supplement twice a day for three months experienced a measurable increase in both mid-cycle basal body temperature and progesterone levels — both of which are used to assess ovulation. Within five months, one-third of the women taking the supplement conceived, compared with none of the women who were not given the supplement.

So there are many things in our environment, nutrition and lifestyle habits that we should take into consideration in terms of pregnancy and conception.
